Ingram
The motivation can be political, philosophical, or religious fanaticism; the results can change history. Assassination is an almanac of a phenomenon that has been a part of political culture for thousands of years. Chronologically arranged, Assassination examines why this violent aspect of human history has happened, to whom it has happened, and its impact on events of the time.

In 1836, the murder of young New York City prostitute Helen Jewett and the ensuing trial of her lover captivated the nation. Jewett (her real name was Dorcas Doyen; Jewett used many pseudonyms during her short life) was an archetypal 1830s model of fallen virtue. A bright, literate girl who worked as a servant for a respected Maine family, Jewett became "disgraced," losing her virginity outside of wedlock, and eventually taking up work as a prostitute in bustling New York City. One of her clients, Richard Robinson, was a young clerk of uncommon literary talent. The two exchanged a long series of letters, often loving and careful, then as quickly as a summer storm, they turned violent and angry.

Early on the morning of April 10, 1836, Robinson stabbed Jewett to death in her brothel room and set fire to her bed. Robinson was eventually acquitted of the crime despite an overwhelming amount of evidence that both placed him at the scene and his hand on the murder weapon. The decision was universally reviled, and Robinson became an outcast who eventually exiled himself to Texas.

Cohen ably places this rather ordinary crime within the context of 19th-century urban life and the development of a fledgling tabloid journalism, showing just how people throughout America came to be shocked by a crime that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. The Murder of Helen Jewett is as much about mores and customs as it is about a lost soul. - James Madison

Master storyteller A.C. Greene re-creates one of America's most bizarre hold-ups, one that began as a lark. On Christmas Eve 1927, four men set off to rob the First National Bank of Cisco, Texas. Soon the lark turned into a tragedy-and at times a comedy-of errors. The robbers did not realize the car they had stolen for their getaway was running on empty. the leader did not anticipate the attention his disguise would draw, even though it was a bright red Santa Claus suit. And they could not have known that all of Cisco would have guns at hand because the Bankers Association had offered a reward of $5000 for any dead bank robber, no questions asked. The Santa Claus bank robbery set off a chain of events that would lead to violence and the death of six men and launch the largest manhunt Texas had ever seen. A.C. Greene's factual account of the unusual crime reads like a novel-fast paced, full of unexpected turns and rich with the flavour of life in Texas at the beginning of the end of the Old West. This new edition contains an Afterword with photographs, some of them never before published, and follow-up information on the lives of the participants, including the surviving robber, witnesses and kidnap victims.

Book Review
This book is an absolutely great read. Not only will it tell you about some of the grimmest crimes in history like Ed Gein, Ian Brady and John Christie at 10 Rillington place, but also it delves in to some of the weirdest crimes such as Matthew Lovat the shoemaker that publicly attempted to crucify himself, the man that sold the Eiffel Tower and the woman that impersonated the pope! One of the great things about this book is that it doesn't just look at the crime from one point of view or has one conclusion but it also goes into the psychology a bit. It is also extremely informative about general history and tells you interesting facts about things. So despite it being a few years old and missing out on some of the more recent crimes such as James Bulgers killing, it is still a great read.

Crimes of Persuasion: Schemes, Scams, Frauds.
by Les Henderson

From the Publisher
The main reason the book was produced was due to the notable shortage of pertinent organized information on the complex topic of telemarketing and investment fraud, despite low government estimates which peg the losses from them at over $45 billion per year in North America.

There are several reasons for this which have been overcome by the author as a result of his background and writing skills.

First of all, investigation of the complex financial workings of investment fraud required someone with experience in the field of securities. Mr. Henderson, once a Chartered Financial Planner and long-time investor himself, is able to maintain accuracy while simplifying the procedures used by the fraudsters into an understandable and entertaining format.

His short, fact-filled examples are broken out into numerous and meaningful categories and classifications which in other works are normally lumped together into tedious statistical or psychological dissertations on fraud as a whole, or too-narrowly focused on one sole example, examined in boring minutiae.

Secondly, he looks at the problem both as a victim and as a former sales trainer and direct sales force manager. Knowing the persuasive techniques used by all professional sales people, but which have been subverted to an evil purpose, he leads you step by step from contact to conviction.

Thirdly, he is able to distill from reams of court transcripts, involving hundreds of cases, the kernel of truth and understanding which appears to be lacking in other works and governmental advisories.

Most importantly, he does not preach the age old sermon of how you should know better if an offer sounds too good. He simply shows what happened to other victims, which number in the millions, then lets you come to your own startling conclusions.

This lack of patronizing and the sometimes humorous and always sardonic style of writing shine a new light on a topic that has been hidden by the shame of its victims. Many people, upon reading the book, determine that they have been defrauded in the past by offers which until now they thought were legitimate.

Finally, it is hoped that by popularising an understanding of these schemes, while exposing the organized and criminal nature of the con artists, that law enforcement efforts will be accelerated and court sentences will reflect the impact of the scams upon its victims.
