The editor has assembled the expert opinions of leading clinicians and researchers from prestigious institutions in an effort to present the recent theories and research on both traditional serial offences and unusual conditions as well. In addition, the work presents the most up-to-date information and thinking on the subject of serial offenders. It contains numerous tables and figures that provide information in an easy-to-read format. Further, the book covers little-discussed issues, such as clergy offenders and female offenders, thereby shedding light on heretofore untouched issues.

Book Review
I was fairly fascinated by every story. The denial systems were so bizarre...some of these serial killers are so famous, and there is so much evidence, yet they lie and lie. I think it helped me sort of know what to look for...or at least that you just can't know who to trust...scariest were the really normal seeming guys...saddest were the one's who appeared so mentally inefficient, they didn't even seem like "serial killers" even though they did murder. I wish Furio would write again, and add herself to the book. I can't imagine what kind of courage it would take to spend such time writing, listening. People trash her for "celebrating killers" but I commend her for letting the rest of us normal folk really feel like they are out there.

"Americans are frightened and outraged by violent crime and their frustration at not being able to stop it. Bashing the insanity defence is universally seen as a way of getting tough on crime. Ironically, as we all seem to abdicate responsibility for our own lives, we seem to assert that everyone else, even the mentally impaired, is responsible for his." Barbara Kirwin is a forensic psychologist most often employed by prosecuting attorneys to distinguish the bona fide mental cases from the fakers. In The Mad, the Bad, and the Innocent she delivers a stinging critique of the American legal system's abuse of the insanity defence--both what she calls "designer defences" that put violent psychopaths in mental hospitals, and the equally deplorable practice of sending schizophrenics to jail. Her writing style is engaging, but she lapses occasionally into a self-dramatizing mode that undercuts the seriousness of her concerns. The strength of The Mad, the Bad, and the Innocent is in the examples: dozens of fascinating case histories illustrate, better than any mere argument could, the complex issues involved in deciding who is sick and who is evil.

Book Description
Profiler Roy Hazelwood is one of the world's leading experts on the strangest and most dangerous of all aberrant offenders-the sexual criminal. In Dark Dreams he reveals the twisted motives and thinking that go into the most reprehensible crimes. He also catalogues the innovative and remarkably effective techniques-investigative approaches that he helped pioneer at the FBI's Behavioural Science Unit--that allow law enforcement agents to construct psychological profiles of the offenders who commit them.
Hazelwood has helped track down some of the most violent and well known criminals in modern history; in Dark Dreams he takes readers into his world--a sinister world inhabited by scores of dangerous offenders for every Roy Hazelwood who would put them behind bars:

* A young woman disappears from the convenience store where she works. Her skeletonised remains are found in a field, near a torture device. Who committed this heinous crime? And why?
* A teenager's body is found hanging in a storm sewer. His clothes are neatly folded by the entrance and a stopwatch is found in his mouth. Is he the victim of a bizarre, ritualistic murder . . . or an elaborate masturbatory fantasy gone awry?
* A married couple, driving with their toddler in the back seat, pick up a female hitchhiker. They kidnap her and for seven years keep her as a sexual slave. The wife agreed to this inhuman arrangement in exchange for a second child. Who was to blame?

As gruesome as the crimes are and as unsettling as the odds seem, Hazelwood proves that the right amount of determination and logic can bring even the most cunning and devious criminals to justice.

Arthur Hyatt-Williams's book on restoring the balance between life and death brings continual surprise that anyone can write so beautifully about humanity's blackest features. His love of life is evident as he explores the death constellation - the encapsulated mental structure that attacks life - in its protean manifestations, everywhere challenging our compassion. He explores its symbolic and mediated forms throughout human experience, and clearly describes conditions in which it is likely to be enacted in homicide or suicide.
Hyatt-Williams tells compelling tales of his unique experience treating murderers and criminals by drawing equally on poetry and science. Click to Amazon to see the rest of this excerpt.

Book Description
Inside the Mind of Sexual Offenders is about sexual offenders: rapists and paedophiles. Not the ones on television or at local movie theatres; these individuals engage in criminally sexual crimes such as serial rape, sexual homicide, necrophilia, child molestation, and paedophilia.
Inside the Mind of Sexual Offenders also contains a full disclosure of three generations of incarcerated sexual offenders who committed the most unspeakable acts towards others for many years. In fact, there's no way of knowing actually how many victims this family assaulted, but in the final analysis there are specifics that you will come to understand about this family and other sexual offenders that may change your point of view about that ultimate punishment available to us. And, finally the last chapter is about criminal profiles of incarcerated men and women who have committed crimes of murder, rape, child molestation and other crimes of violence, and yet our justice system, regrettably, has few clues about the extent of their criminal lifestyles. The work in this book is about discussions you don't want to have with anyone, let alone a stranger!
